My career STARTED IN BETWEEN
CHINA & Los angeles
about me:
Joseph Krassenstein 柯雅星
Brand and Athlete Marketer
I was born in Singapore and am Chinese & American. I lived in 6 countries growing up, but I consider Shanghai and Los Angeles home after spending significant time in both cities throughout my life. I graduated from the University of Southern California (USC) where I earned bachelor degrees in Print & Digital Journalism and East Asian Languages and Cultures: Chinese and later completed a Master of Public Diplomacy degree. While at USC, I was the captain and president of the USC Trojan Rugby Club for 3 years and walked-on the American-Football team as a punter for 2 seasons. I speak fluent English, Chinese and am conversational in Spanish.
It was through playing NCAA D1 football at USC that I was first exposed to the business of sport. I began to focus my career in sports marketing and luckily was able to play for, learn from, and work with one of the most recognizable and successful properties in collegiate athletics. During university I had the opportunity to intern at NFL China, NFL Network, Spectrum Sportsnet, and Wasserman Media Group.
After university I continued to play a high level rugby winning a gold medal for the United States in the 2017 World Maccabi Games and later played for the Chinese National Rugby 7’s team. This was all while helping to start AIB Sportsbrands Studios, a Chinese-funded media network with offices in Beijing and Los Angeles. Our product, MORE体育, is a sports lifestyle entertainment platform available for download in Mainland China on the Apple and Android app stores. In my role of Director of Marketing and Sales, I managed the go-to-market strategy, brand marketing, social media, and user acquisition for the MORE体育 app. I also oversaw the Chinese social media account and brand sponsorship management for 16 NBA players. I worked at AIB Sportsbrands for 5 years from 2016-2019 in Los Angeles and 2019-2021 in Shanghai.
In the summer of 2021, I joined Nike China as a Senior Manager on the Brand Experiences team. In this role I created, managed, and executed Nike & Jordan brand-defining experiences - both online & offline throughout China. I was one of the team leaders for some pretty amazing campaigns including: The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Air Jordan’s 25th Anniversary in China, International Women’s Day, and the 2022 Asian Games.
After moving back to the Los Angeles in the summer of 2022, my role at Nike China shifted to working remote to support the Athlete Marketing team. Since there was no one on the ground able to help serve all of Nike China’s sponsored-athletes training and competing in the US, I was able to step in and carry these projects through to completion. I had the privilege of producing Phoenix Sun Kevin Zhang’s mini-documentary from NBA Summer League and was the lead producer/interviewer shooting LeBron James and his newly released 20th edition signature shoe campaign for China in the Fall of 2022.
I left Nike at the end of 2022 and began freelancing in sports content production in Los Angeles. In the spring of 2023, I joined sports marketing agency 160over90, an Endeavor Company, to help lead T-Mobile’s sponsorship of the inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix. After a successful race integration for T-Mobile I moved into my current role managing Kia Automotive’s sponsorship of the NBA.
